Lombard’s drainage challenges go beyond heavy rainfall. Roughly one-third of the village has combined sewers that carry both stormwater and wastewater, increasing the risk of basement backups when the system becomes overwhelmed. But not every flooded basement is a sewer issue. Sump pump failures, foundation seepage, and poor surface drainage can cause similar problems.
Building conditions matter, too. Older plumbing connections, finished basements, and previous renovations can make water damage harder to assess. Moisture can travel beneath flooring and behind walls, requiring a thorough inspection to determine what can be dried and what needs replacement.
