RestoPros VP of Marketing Tim Eyre Published in Facilities Management Advisor

New article looks at how quiet summer buildings face mold problems in the fall, and what schools can do before students walk back in.
RestoPros VP of Marketing Tim Eyre has a new byline in Facilities Management Advisor, the trade publication covering maintenance, safety, and building operations. The article, “Before the First Bell: Stopping Mold Before Schools Reopen,” walks facilities teams through the moisture conditions that build up over summer break and the inspection checklist to catch them early.
The premise is simple. As Eyre writes, an empty school still has an active roof, active plumbing, and an active HVAC system, but fewer people inside to notice a musty odor, a stained ceiling tile, or water under a mechanical unit. The article cites U.S. EPA guidance warning that summer breaks often end with significant mold problems in schools, driven by higher outdoor humidity, reduced cooling-system operation, and moisture from work like carpet cleaning and painting. Per the EPA, only a couple of weeks under those conditions can lead to an expensive cleanup.
The consequences are far greater than the repair bill. Eyre points to a National Education Association account of a Maryland elementary school where recurring leaks and persistent humidity brought mold back again and again, often worsening while the building sat unoccupied over the summer. The article notes that 22 students and staff members became ill after spending time in one classroom, which prompted an evacuation and an air-quality investigation.
Mold Is a Moisture Problem First
Eyre’s guidance to facilities teams is to start with the water rather than with a search for a particular type of mold. In the article, that means inspecting the building in layers from the roof inward, trending indoor relative humidity by zone instead of judging readiness by temperature, and treating condensate drainage, insulation, filtration, and control sequences as parts of the same moisture-management system. He cites NIOSH guidance advising that wet materials be dried within 48 hours or removed and makes the point that a cosmetic repair leaves the underlying condition untouched.
That is the same approach RestoPros brings to homes, schools, and commercial buildings every day. Our teams locate the moisture source, dry the structure with professional equipment, and handle mold remediation and water damage restoration so the problem does not return after the repair. If you manage a building with a musty smell, a recurring stain, or humidity you cannot get under control, find your local RestoPros or contact us any time, day or night.
